Sudden Stop Brake Light System with Variable Illumination Pattern

The brake lights of a vehicle serve to warn other vehicles that the vehicle is decelerating or is stopped. Conventional brake lights however, fail to indicate the rate of deceleration of a vehicle. As a result, the brake light does not indicate when a vehicle is coming to a sudden stop, which are the cause of many rear end collisions. What is needed is a brake light system that indicates when a vehicle is making a sudden stop or decelerating rapidly.

The present invention is a brake light system in which the brake light pattern changes as more pressure is applied to the brake pedal. The change in pattern of the brake light would indicate how hard the vehicle was braking.

In Figure 1 a sudden stop brake light system with variable illumination pattern is shown. Pressure applied to the brake pedal 110 causes pressure transducer 120 (of piezo electric type for example) to generate an analog signal that is proportional to pressure applied to brake pedal 110. The analog signal from pressure transducer 120 is converted by A/D converter 130 to a digital signal and transmitted to program logic device 140. Program logic device 140 transmits signal to brake light driver A 150, brake light driver B 155 and brake light driver C 157. Brake light driver A 150, brake light driver B 155 and brake light driver C 157 sends electric current to brake light A 160, brake light B 165 and brake light C 167 as shown, which causes brake light A 160, brake light B 165 and brake light C 167 to illuminate. The algorithm contained in program logic device 140 is programmed such that the greater the pressure applied to brake pedal 110, the greater the number of brake light drivers the program logic device 140 transmits signals to and consequently the greater the number brake lights that are illuminated. For example program logic device 140 could transmits a signal to

brake light driver A 150,

when light pressure is applied to the brake pedal 110;

brake light driver A 150 and brake light driver B 155,

when moderate pressure is applied to the brake pedal 110;

brake light driver A 150 and brake light driver B 155 and brake light driver C 157,

when strong pressure is applied to the brake pedal 110.

Figure 2 illustrates one example of a brake light for which the pattern of illumination would change. The present invention is not limited to the number of brake lights and brake light drivers or pattern of brake light shown.
