Varying Intensity Sudden Stop Brake Light System

The brake lights of a vehicle serve to warn other vehicles that the vehicle is decelerating or is stopped. Conventional brake lights however, fail to indicate the rate of deceleration of a vehicle. As a result, the brake light does not indicate when a vehicle is coming to a sudden stop, which are the cause of many rear end collisions. What is needed is a brake light system that indicates when a vehicle is making a sudden stop or decelerating rapidly.

The present invention is a brake light system in which the intensity of the brake light increases the greater the rate of deceleration of the vehicle.

In Figure 1 a varying intensity sudden stop brake light system is shown. Speedometer 110 contains decelerometer 120 that generates an analog signal that is proportional to the rate of deceleration of the vehicle. Decelerometer 120 transmits signal to amplifier 125, which amplifies signal and transmits signal to A/D converter 130. The analog signal from amplifier 125 is converted by A/D converter 130 to a digital signal and transmitted to program logic device 140. Program logic device 140 sends signal, to A/D converter 150, which converts signal to analog signal that is transmitted to brake light driver 160. Brake light driver 160 sends electric current to brake light 170, which causes brake light 160 to illuminate. The algorithm contained in program logic device 140 is programmed such that the greater the rate of deceleration of the vehicle as measured by speedometer 110, the greater the number of brake light drivers the program logic device 140 transmits signals to and consequently the greater the number brake lights that are illuminated. . For example program logic device 140 could transmits a signal to

brake light driver A 150,

when the rate of deceleration of the vehicle is small;

brake light driver A 150 and brake light driver B 155,

when the rate of deceleration of the vehicle is moderate;

brake light driver A 150 and brake light driver B 155 and brake light driver C 157,

when the rate of deceleration of the vehicle is rapid.

The present invention is not limited to the number of brake lights and drivers shown.
