External Hazard Light System for Monitoring Transmission Failure

The external hazard lights of a vehicle serve to warn other vehicles that the vehicle presents a potential hazard. Conventional external hazard lights however, must be manually activated and therefore may not provide warning of the onset of a sudden hazard, such as when a vehicle's transmission fails. What is needed is an external hazard light system that indicates when a vehicle's transmission fails.

The present invention is an external hazard light system that is activated when a vehicle's transmission fails.

In Figure 1 an external hazard light system for monitoring transmission failure. Transmission monitor 110 monitors the operation of the vehicle's transmission. Failure of transmission causes transmission monitor 110 to generate an analog signal, which it transmits to amplifier 120, which amplifies signal and transmits signal to A/D converter 130. The analog signal from amplifier 120 is converted by A/D converter 130 to a digital signal and transmitted to program logic device 140. Program logic device 140 sends signal, to flasher 150, that controls the activation of flasher 150. Flasher 150 transmits signal to external hazard light driver 160, which sends electric current to external hazard light 170, causing external hazard light 170 to flash. The algorithm contained in program logic device 140 is programmed such that failure of the transmission as indicated by transmission monitor 110 causes program logic devise 140 to activate external hazard light 170 to flash.
