Abstract

This article of manufacture is directed to a portable skate sharpener, more specifically a pocket-sized device for sharpening blades for ice skates. The portable skate sharpener is manufactured from a hard plastic outer casing with a grooved surface for better gripping surrounding two rectangular angled whetstones for sharpening. The angles of the whetstones can be adjusted to allow for various sharpening angles, depending on personal preference.

PORTABLE SKATE SHARPENER

This article of manufacture is directed to a portable skate sharpener, more specifically a pocket-sized device for sharpening blades for ice skates.

A frequent problem with skaters, particularly those who skate for an extended amount of time in a single session, is the dulling of skate blades, and subsequently the loss of control as the blades slip on the ice rather than cutting it. Additionally, skates rented at an ice rink facility frequently are dulled from use, and not adequately sharpened for peak performance. At present, the only remedy of this problem is to have the blades sharpened using an electrically driven sharpening wheel. This isn't always possible, convenient or time expedient. The present invention would allow a skater to sharpen skate blades "on the spot" to enhance performance and enjoyment of the sport.

The portable skate sharpener is manufactured from a hard plastic outer casing with a grooved surface for better gripping surrounding two rectangular angled whetstones for sharpening. The angles of the whetstones can be adjusted to allow for various sharpening angles, depending on personal preference.

Figure 1 Portable Skate Blade Sharpener

Figure 1 shows a hard plastic case 100, textured gripping grooves 110, sharpening whetstones 120, whetstone spacing adjustment 130, whetstone angle adjustment 140, whetstone position lock 150 and skate blade 160. The sharpening angle of the whetstones can be adjusted by the angle adjustment 140, which changes the set angle of the whetstone, and the spacing adjustment 130, which adjusts the vertical space between the whetstones. The whetstone position can then be locked into place with position lock 150. The skate blade 160 is placed in the groove between the whetstones and the sharpener is pulled in the direction of the arrow.
