SYSTEM BACKGROUND

In Motorola's ASTRO land-mobile radio system, the Universal Crypto Module (UCM) is used to encrypt and decrypt voice and data traffic in subscriber radio units.

In this system, keys are given textual names to aid the users in operation of secure features, in making judgements about received secure transmissions, and to debug problems in key distribution of the system itself.

The radio is capable of displaying the key name that is delivered to the module along with the key via Over The Air Rekeying (OTAR).

THE PROBLEM

Some radios do not provide a display, making the key name inaccessible to the user. Furthermore, sometimes the display is not in a convenient location for viewing by the user.

THE SOLUTION

The radio currently used tones and "clicks" to indicate such things as whether the call is secure or clear to the user without the need to see a display. This solution proposes that the radio use a brief recorded audible key name to indicate the key name to the user.

This solution proposes that the recorded and vocoded key name be sent via OTAR along with the key data and the textual key name. When a call is started with a key, the secure module will insert the vocoded data into the DSP stream to be decoded and played to the speaker.

This will allow the system's crypto officer to manage key names, both textual and audible, centrally at the Key Management Facility (KMF). This will also provide key indications to all types of radios under all conditions making the use of secure more uniform and easily managed.
