A method for reducing duplicate or similar email

Disclosed is a method for reducing duplicate or similar email. Benefits include the support for deleting or redirecting email based on previously received email.

The components of the disclosed method include:

Data files to be delivered to the user's mailbox

Mailbox delivery software agent (including filters and anti-spam components)

The user's inbox or predefined inbox folders

Conventionally, the data file is processed by user/system defined filters and anti-spam components (see Figure 1). Then, the mailbox delivery agent prepares to append the email message to the destination file. It is typically the user's inbox but may be another file as specified in the filters. Using the disclosed method, the mailbox delivery agent compares the email message to all the messages already contained in the destination file.

Conventional systems do not include a method for automatically deleting or redirecting duplicate or similar email. The disclosed method enables the automatic deletion of duplicate email. In addition, the user may specify the properties that constitute similarity among emails and actions to be performed when similarity is determined (see Figure 2).
