Disclosed is a design for an integrated chemical/gas sensor for remote monitoring utilizing spatio-temporal filtering. Benefits include the capability to detect odor data and alert users to a danger, provide the information to a remote location, or serve as an input to a virtual reality world.

The disclosed design is for a sensor (chemfet) that is part of a chipset (see Figure 1) or microprocessor and is sensitive to a specific chemical, for example CO and CO2. Sieve mechanisms filter the chemical at a gate level. Temporal detection is available due to the height of the cavity above the gate.

This design may be implemented as a chemical detector for many types of chemicals including drugs and explosives. The sensor may serve as an input device for a virtual reality system.
