Method for a digital wireless voice chat instant messaging, PC peripheral device

Disclosed is a method for a digital wireless audio device that functions as a personal computer (PC) peripheral for instant messaging with voice chat capability. Benefits include improved portability, user convenience, and support for simultaneous voice/text messaging.

General description

The components of this invention include a portable device, a base station, and PC software (see Figure 1).

A small, portable, handheld device capable of recording (using a microphone) and rendering digital audio data (using a speaker) transmits and receives data via a wireless connection to the PC. The device may also contain a display, such as a liquid crystal display (LCD), for displaying information to the user and a keypad for data entry from the user. The device may be battery operated with the option for external DC power via a power adapter.

A base station peripheral is connected to the PC via some wired connection such as (but not limited to) universal serial bus (USB). Alternatively, the base station hardware could be part of the PC, that is, embedded into the PC motherboard. This base station must be capable of transmitting and receiving data via a wireless connection to the device.

Software running on the PC (host software) that is responsible for the following functions:

·        Connecting to the internet

·        Locating and establishing a connection to internet servers that host content and the instant messaging (IM) services that are used by the device

·        Bi-directional communication of data to and from the internet with the device.

The invention is not tied to a particular wireless technology (for example, Bluetooth, 802.11, and HomeRF), specific audio data formats or specific instant messaging services. An implementation of this invention can use any wireless technology that meets the cost, battery life, range, interference and data rate criteria needed for a successful product.

Multiple devices could be connected via a wireless link to a single base station and PC. In this application, each device user could be logged on simultaneously to the same or different instant messaging servers and conducting multiple voice chat sessions simultaneously. At the same time, a user could be using the PC for Internet or non-Internet related uses.

Applications

The disclosed method enables the device to function as a wireless audio peripheral to the PC and send/receive audio content to and from the Internet via the PC. The method can be applied to several applications, including:

·        Instant messaging voice chat

·        Instant messaging voice chat extension to a text chat device

·        Instant messaging voice chat with voice recognition

In the instant messaging (IM) voice chat application of the disclosed method, the device is a wireless peripheral for IM using voice chat with other Internet instant messaging users. The user logs on to an IM service on the Internet from the device. The host software...
