IMPROVED LID-TORQUE TEST FIXTURE

Mil-STD.983 requires that the lid seal integrity of certain types of integrated circuit packages be tested by measuring the torque required to shear the lid from the package.

It has been observed that prior art fixtures used for applying the lid-torque test caused premature package failure and did not yield consistent results.

   In the old equipment, every part of the test fixture, from the collet (10) which holds the package to the swivel (20) which applies the torque, was fixed on a rigid center line. Due to small variations in package dimension and lid position, this caused uneven torque loading on the package. In some cases the torque was being applied only to one package corner, resulting in diagonal cracks through the cover and very low torque readings. Using a torque transfer shaft (30) having swivel shaped ends per- mits the new tooling to be fully articulated and allows everything to even out before torque is applied. The torque tooling described herein provides a flexibility that was not possible with the old tooling. All four corners of the package and the lid are stressed evenly. More consistent and higher lid-torque reading resulted.
