Disclosed is a method for thermal interface material (TIM) environmental protection by a thermal interface gasket with an integral protective cover. Benefits include reduced pump-out and dry-out of thermal interface material, and improved heat sink performance.

General description

              The disclosed method includes a device that provides environmental protection for the TIM. The device has an integral cover that protects the TIM (grease) during shipment and is removed during assembly of the heat sink. The gasket remains attached to the IHS. The gasket controls the thickness of the pre-applied grease and prevents the heat sink from tilting relative to the IHS. The gasket assures optimum thermal performance and prevents or reduces TIM pump-out or dry-out.

              The key elements of the method include an integrated gasket and protective cover specially constructed to fit on the IHS at the perimeter. The gasket portion of the device separates from the cover during assembly of the heat sink, and remains attached to the IHS. The cover is discarded.

              The disclosed method addresses the problem of:

·        Protection of the thermal interface material (grease) during shipment, storage, and handling
