Disclosed is a method of providing end-to-end consumer multimedia content protection over the Internet to the home. Benefits include improved security for streaming movies to a PC for playback.

Background

              Methods of encoding and playing back movies on the PC platform enable the distribution of full-length movies over the Internet. The entertainment industry is concerned about copyright and royalty issues similar to those of the audio music industry. One solution to securely receiving and playing back digital movies is to use a PC as a playback device. However, PCs are not the platform typically selected by users for movie viewing in the home. Secure PC viewers also require changes to the PC platform that increase the cost of the PC and which may be met by market opposition. The disclosed method addresses these issues while still leveraging the home PC.

Description

              The disclosed method includes a PC/CE adapter device, set-top box, or entertainment console that is loaded with the required software and built as a closed, secure unit. This box may be located in the family room and is connected to the home network and a television set and/or stereo system. The home network can be either wired or wireless media including Ethernet, HomePNA, HomeRF, 802.11b, 802.11a, and 1394. The television and/or stereo system uses analog connectors and/or digital connectors (such as DVI and 1394). If a digital connection to the television is used, the digital stream must be encrypted in some format (such as DVI or 1394 4C).

              The adapter box uses UPnP or some other protocol to identify itself on the home network. UPnP for example is preferred because no configuration is required from the user. The box’s software includes the key required to create a trust relationship with content providers. When a low-cost is required, the unit would not include storage, a GUI, Internet connectivity, or e-commerce software. The device must include a video out connector, a home network connector, a de-scrambler, and a video decoder chip. However, a device may provide additional features and functionality.

              The PC first establishes contact with a content provider. If the adapter box includes a trust certificate from an independent organization, the user is free to shop the Internet and select a content provider. The disclosed method is compatible with one or many providers. The secure device can be utilized by a PC in the home network to encrypt and decrypt network messages and verify one-time trust certificates. This functionality would be used by the PC to authenticate, ask for, and receive metadata surrounding the content. Metadata includes information like the list of available movies, descriptions, ratings, and prices. The hosting PC software may run in the background and use the secure adapter unit for cryptography and the display of user options on the television set.
