Disclosed is a method for a roaming computer display. Benefits include improved display portability while providing the full functionality of a desktop computer.

General description

              The disclosed method is a computer and display combination that enables the data cable connecting the computer to the display to be unplugged (detached) without disrupting the display’s logical connection to the computer.  In addition, controls on the display can be used to send user input data to the computer. When detached, the display receives and sends data via a wireless connection. When attached, the display sends and receives data via a data cable.

              When the display is detached from the computer and using a wireless connection, the operation of the display is nearly identical to the cabled operation. However, display updates occur at a higher peak rate when the display is attached to the computer using a data cable. Some source material displayed in the wireless mode may exhibit motion artifacts not present when the display is cabled to the computer. Some source material such as full-motion video is not suitable for full resolution display when the display is detached and operating via the wireless connection. This material can be shown at a lower screen resolution in wireless mode by using a portion of the display surface for the material. For the vast majority of software applications that send data to the display, display operation appears identical to the end user, whether the display is attached to or detached from the computer.

Detailed description

              The disclosed method requires the use of sparse refresh in the graphics system of the computer and in the display. Sparse refresh only requires the computer graphics controller to send to the display those pixels that have changed since the last screen update. Updates occur at the system refresh rate. The display receives the changed pixel data along with location information for these pixels and updates itself accordingly.
