Abstract

The circuit described optimizes microcomputer performance by reference clock selection options, The circuit consists of selected interconnection, at the time of manufacturing, between a gated or a continuous reference frequency and a particular system circuit element. Manufacturing connection selection may be implemented with any interconnection layer (i.e. metal, diffussion, or polysilicon).

INTEGRATED CIRCUIT ikiNG ELEMENTS TO SELECT CLOCK SOURCE

by Mark Howard Babcock

ABSTRACT:

The circuit described optimizes microcomputer performance by reference clock selection options,

The circuit consists of selected interconnection, at the time of manufacturing, between a gated or a continuous reference frequency and a particular system circuit element. Manufacturing connection selection may be implemented with any interconnection layer (i.e. metal, diffussion, or polysilicon).

By selection of a continuous reference frequency, a particular circuit element may process continuously for critical tasks or real time response even when the microcomputer CPU halts operation to save power.

Alternatively, a particular circuit element may halt operation upon internal command by selection of a gated reference clock which significantly reduces power consumption by that circuit element.

Selection at the time of manufacturing provides customization of the microcomputer to varying application re- quirements. Also, device size is minimized.
