Abstract

This invention allows a pager to automatically peak tune itself using an RSSI (received signal strength indicator) incorporated within the IF integrated circuit, A final IF integrated circuit with RSSI circuitry is used to detect the received strength of an externally generated RF signal. Under the control of a microprocessor or custom IC, the resonators in a voltage tuned RF preselector are systematically tuned (via D/A converters) to provide maximum or mimimum detected power at the RSSI as required by the filter tuning criteria. When tuning is complete, the D/A settings that arrived at are stored in the pager in a non- volatile memory (e.g. EEPROM).

   This method substantially improves the tuning accuracy of the receiver because no external probing is required. Also, because no external programming is required, the cost and design cycle time for production fixturing is greatly decreased. When used in conjunction with asynthesized pager, this method can be used to store optimum narmwband filter and antenna tuning parameters, thus allowing Motorola to achieve the lower cost/higher performance advantages available with existing technology.
