The operator will scan the reel and the feeder, then the computer data base would compare the two and gives the operator feedback whether the reel and the feeder match. This system is not full proof. After scanning the pair, the reel could still be incorrectly loaded onto the machine. The Panasert feeders are so compactly loaded on the machine that feeders could be inadvertently swapped during kit changeovers.

CURRENT APPROACH:

   Commercial tape and reels have bar code labels on them. The operator will scan the reel and the feeder, then the computer data base would compare the two and gives the operator feedback whether the reel and the feeder match. This system is not full proof. After scanning the pair, the reel could still be incorrectly loaded onto the machine. The Panasert feeders are so compactly loaded on the machine that feeders could be inadvertently swapped during kit changeovers.

PROPOSEDAPPROACH:

   The bar code would be improved if the Panasert reads the bar code on the fly and flags the operator if the reels are loaded wrong, however the Panasert does not have this capability presently. The next generation of Panasert also do not have the closed loop bar code reader capability, therefore mechanically coded reels, feeders and feeders slots are proposed. The proposed modifications to the reels, feeders, and feeder base are as follows:

   1) REELS: A hvo piece plastic hub made inexpensively by injection molding is attached permanently to the reel by snapping the interlocking pieces into the center of the reel (see figure 1). The reel is free spinning on this hub. The hub contains a pattern of perforated holes representing the feeder number the reel of parts is assigned to (see figure
