Abstract

Pagers (or any other body worn device with a non- audible sensory alarm) in the silent (e.g. vibrator) alert mode are often removed from the body and placed on a desk or table, or in a briefcase or purse without being switched from the silent to the audible mode. In the silent mode, and without bodily contact, alerts from these devices will go undetected. A method to automatically switch the device to the audible mode when in such a situation as described below.

   Pagers (or any other body worn device with a non- audible sensory alarm) in the silent (e.g. vibrator) alert mode are often removed from the body and placed on a desk or table, or in a briefcase or purse without being switched from the silent to the audible mode. In the silent mode, and without bodily contact, alerts from these devices will go undetected. A method to automatically switch the device to the audible mode when in such a situation as described below.

  A motion sensing device, either mechanical (e.g. mer- cury switch or a device similar to a self-winding watch movement) or piezoelectric (piezoelectric motion sen- sor) can be used to sense the presence or lack of motion of the device. A sensing circuit tied to the detection device would preferably have a long detection window (varia- ble depending on the application) to avoid b&g "tripped' by a person sitting very still, but likely to move every few minutes (anyone not moving for too long a period could probably use the audible alert anyway!)

  Basically, when set in the "silent" mode, the sens- ing circuit, upon detecting no movement within the allotted time sensing window, would cause the pager to revert back to the audible mode. After an alert, the pager would continue to sense for periods of move- ment again; In this case, when the pager is again picked up...
