Abstract

Process for determining one or more physico-chemical parameters of a mixture comprising at least one sulphonate and an oil. The sulphonate to be analysed being synthetic or natural and soluble in the oil, the process comprising the following steps: a) reference mixtures are selected, each comprising at least one reference sulphonate and at least one oil, the reference sulphonate being synthetic or natural and soluble in the oil and the number of reference mixtures being greater than or equal to 2.Y, where Y represents the number of physico-chemical parameters to be determined; b) for each of the reference mixtures, at least one physico-chemical parameter is measured by a conventional analysis method; c) an IR spectrum is produced for each of the reference mixtures; d) a physical variable is selected from each IR spectrum produced in step c) and it is determined; e) a mathematical reference model is produced by correlation between, on the one hand, each parameter measured in step b) for each of the reference mixtures and, on the other hand, the physical variable selected and determined in step d) for each of the corresponding reference mixtures; f) the IR spectrum of the mixture to be analysed is produced; g) the physical variable selected in step d) is determined from the IR spectrum produced in step f); h) the physico-chemical parameter of the mixture to be analysed is determined from the physical variable of the IR spectrum determined in step g) and the mathematical model produced in step e).

ABSTRACT

a)     reference mixtures are selected, each comprising at least one reference sulphonate and at least one oil, the reference sulphonate being synthetic or natural and soluble in the oil and the number of reference mixtures being greater than or equal to 2.Y, where Y represents the number of physico-chemical parameters to be determined;

b)     for each of the reference mixtures, at least one physico-chemical parameter is measured by a conventional analysis method;

c)   an IR spectrum is produced for each of the reference mixtures;

d)   a physical variable is selected from each IR spectrum produced in step c) and it is determined;

f)  the IR spectrum of the mixture to be analysed is produced;

h)   the physico-chemical parameter of the mixture to be analysed is determined from the physical variable of the IR spectrum determined in step g) and the mathematical model produced in step e).

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The present invention is a process for determining one or more physico-chemical parameters of a mixture comprising at least one sulphonate and at least one oil, this sulphonate being synthetic or natural and soluble in the oil.

                      Synthetic or natural sulphonates soluble in oil, in particular aryl sulphonates of alkali metals and di-aryl sulphonates of alkaline-earth metals soluble in oil, are known to be useful as additives in compositions of lubricating oils.

                      These sulphonates are usually marketed in the form of mixtures comprising at least one sulphonate and an oil, generally a mineral or synthetic oil.  Apart from the sulphonate and the oil, this mixture may contain other additives such as alkyl phenates.  The mixture may be added to engine oil, so that the additive or additives that it contains may ensure the operation of same.

                      These mixtures of sulphonates and oil may be analysed by conventional methods well known to a person skilled in the art.

                      In this regard, reference may be made in particular to the method described in standard ASTM D3712-91, pages 572-579, the whole of the teaching of which is incorporated in the present description.  This method permits the determination of several physico-chemical parameters of a mixture of a sulphonate and an oil, in particular its oil concentration, its sulphonat...
