Abstract

Portable electronics products are typically used in a variety of physical environments. This range of operat- ing conditions frequently requires that the internal com- ponents of these products be protected from dust, humidity, and harsh chemicals that would affect proper function of the equipment. Many products today solve the environmental seal problem today through the use of elastomeric seals.

FOR PORTABLE PRODUCTS ;i

by Craig E Siddoway, Wm. Mark Bradford and Vito Dionisio

I,

Portable electronics products are typically used in a variety of physical environments. This range of operat- ing conditions frequently requires that the internal com- ponents of these products be protected from dust, humidity, and harsh chemicals that would affect proper function of the equipment. Many products today solve the environmental seal problem today through the use of elastomeric seals.

Typical electronics products, such as two-way radios and accessories, have many external features for interconnection and user control. These features may include antennae, switches, interconnect pads and cables, and can present the following design requirements:

l Because these features control or interconnect to internal components, the solid product housing is usually penetrated by the external control or inter- connect feature, creating a condition requiring a

Sd l The function of external switches and push-buttons usually requires relative motion between the switch and the housing into which it is mounted.

l External antennae require a flexible outer cover to protect the internal components, provide a strain relief for bending, and provide a seal to the prod- uct housing.

l Power and interconnect cables must be sealed and strain-relieved.

The invention comprises a unique combination of common...
