Abstract

As technology continues to shrink the electronic components that go into pagers, the pager housing can become a convenient place to store other articles people wish to carry with them. With the volume required for the pager circuitry steadily reducing, additional space becomes available within the housing which can be uti- lized to provide storage space for a variety of items, or even be specially designed to accommodate specific arti- cles. Other portable electronic devices, such as telephones and portable stereos, could also be placed in housings or cabinets that are larger than necessary to accommodate other items. Several examples of what could be done with the extra space in a pager housing follow.

MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS OF VACANT PAGER CAVITIES

by Victoria A. Leonardo

PAGER CAVITY FOR BUILT-IN LIPSTICK OR LIP BALM HOLDER

In this application, people can carry/wear both a pager and a tube of lip stick or lip balm in one unit. A cavity is built into the housing of the pager to hold a standard size tube of lip stick or lip balm, making carry- ing them more convenient and easily accessible. If the pager is worn on the belt, the lipstick or lip balm becomes even easier to reach than when carried in the pocket.

any standard size package of lip product, or designed to accept only a particular brand.

PAGER CAVITY FOR FLUID SPRAY DISPENSER

A fluid reservoir built into the housing of a pager would allow people to carry perfume, cologne, hair spray, air freshener, or any other fluid they want to dispense in a spray form. A pump spray or atomizer type spray dispenser is incorporated into the housing. The same modification could be made to any electronics device.

This combination would also appeal to women pager users and others who wish to dispense various fluids when away from home, or when they do not wish to carry a separate container. By depressing the reservoir access, the atomizer head is compressed into the dis- play assembly (see Figure 2), actuating the pump tube and atomizer, and spraying the fluid through an opening in the housing.

PAGER CAVITY FOR CARRYING SURVIVAL KIT SUPPLIES

Another application of a vacant pager cavity is to build in tools similar to a Swiss Army knife. This allows users to carry/wear a pager and several survival tools in one device. This application also combines the pager with an air and water tight cavity for storing matches or other supplies, and instruments such as those provided in the conventional Swiss Army knife, i.e.; scissors, knife, screw- driver, etc. (See Figure 3). In addition, the exterior sur-

This combination would appeal especially to women pager users who use lip stick or lip balm, and men pager users who use lip balm, particularly in extreme climates where lip skin can become dry and peel. The lip stick or lip balm product is removed from the storage cavity for application and replacement. (See Figure 1)....
