Abstract

Currently Motorola Pagers use the SC1 (Serial Com- munications Interface) to provide a means of changing Code Plug options, end of line testing, and printer inter- faces. This is usually accomplished by a hard contact method. Typically a metal contact is provided by a printed circuit board, internal to the pager, for which an electri- cal contact can be made from outside the pager. In order to achieve SC1 communications multiple contacts are required. The current method of providing contacts has associated with it multiple problems: 1. Not able to achieve a water resistant pager. 2. Holes in the housing of the pager through which electrical contact is made. 3. Extra precaution must be taken to provide ESD protection to SC1 port. 4. Gold contact pins must be used to minimize oxi- dation and poor contacts. 5. Large contact surfaces, which require enormous room inside the pager, must be used in order to guarantee electrical contact.

TWO-WAY IR SCI THROUGH PAGER HOUSING OR LCD

INTRODUCTION

Currently Motorola Pagers use the SC1 (Serial Com- munications Interface) to provide a means of changing Code Plug options, end of line testing, and printer inter- faces. This is usually accomplished by a hard contact method. Typically a metal contact is provided by a printed circuit board, internal to the pager, for which an electri- cal contact can be made from outside the pager. In order to achieve SC1 communications multiple contacts are required. The current method of providing contacts has associated with it multiple problems:

By using Infra Red (IR) detector and emitter diodes the data sent over the SC1 can be transmitted and received through the pager housing or LCD glass. The elimina- tion of electrical contacts between the pager and pro- grammer or printer interface helps to make the pager a more rugged product and eliminate the previously mentioned problems.
