Background

              Loopback testing is a common method for testing devices that transmit and receive data from external sources. A device can use either an internal loopback scheme to emulate data transfer within the device or an external loopback device to crossover the transmit and receive data paths.

Description

              When multiple devices are used within a system, a method of connecting the loopback paths of the devices together to form a single loopback path results in a single test loop to test all the devices in the path. Compared to testing each device separately, this approach reduces the amount of time needed to test the devices.

              The disclosed method creates a single loopback path between a CT bus switch and an Ethernet MAC device. A common handler for the two devices manages the receive and transmit operations. This enables data to be propagated in a predictable manner through the single loopback path.
