  The device utilizes a light-emitter eg LED housed together with a light detector. The assembly is mounted vertically above a transparent bead containing a liquid with a light-reflecting surface, such as mercury or a mirrored float.

  In the vertical position light is focussed through the outer skin of the transparent bead on to the surface of the liquid which reflects it back to the detector.

  As the product in which the device is housed is tilted, the liquid's surface maintains a true horizontal position, such that at a certain angle, light is no longer reflected back to the detector. The angle at which this occurs and therefore the sensitivity of the device can be varied by using differing beads in which the surface area of the liquid available to reflect the light is larger or smaller.
