ONE-PIECE BATTERY HOLDER

by Mostafa Hedayatnia

The existing battery holders, especially the one used for Ilat batteries, are made of two pieces: the plastic frame, and the metal contact.

A one-piece battery holder made of platable plastic with conductive plating, such as gold, on specific zones to provide battery connections shown in Figure below.

Technology for plating plastic already exists. Best routes and zones for the plating can be determined by looking at the location of the battery contacts on the existing Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

A deformed shape of the plastic can provide a leaf- spring under the battery (pointed with B arrow in View

X-X). Easy battery insertion and firm grasping of the battery can be achieved by providing a wider area for battery, and a grasping mechanism on the side. Upon inserting the battery holder point A will be pushed in, which causes the battery to be held tightly.

Another advantage of this one-piece battery holder is the fact that it surrounds the battery securely at the time of any severe mechanical shocks.

Inserting and replacing the battery in the conven- tional battery holders damage the side metal contacts by bending them. In this one-piece-battery holder this problem will not happen, since there is no bending or applying stress.
