USER CAPABILITY OF SWITCHING THE PAGER FROM KATAKANA TO ENGLISH FOR PROMPTS AND PRE-SET CANNED MESSAGES

by Rob Sapashe, Sandra Humphrey and Jean Evans

In the Japan market, where Katakana symbols are widely used to display pager functions and messages, the Japanese find it sometimes useful and trendy to use English characters instead of Katakana.

Thru the use of menus, the pager will allow the user to switch between Katakana and English prompts and pre-set canned messages (both of these are stored in the pager in both languages). This feature can be overriden through the code plug programmer such that when

desired, the pager will only display English characters or only display Katakana characters. If it is known in advance that only one language will be used then the pager can be programmed for that language and make the menu options less complex (the option to switch between Katakana and English will not be displayed).

See Figure 1. below for a operational sequence example.
