   Ordnance (bomb) fuzing technology is used by the military to accurately determine height above ground for air burst detonation of delivered ordnance by Doppler radar techniques which calculate the distance from a falling bomb to the surface. Fuzes are low cost, expend- able items produced in high volume by Motorola GEG.

  The Global Positioning System (GPS) includes a Department of Defense satellite constellation providing continuous three-dimensional navigation (position) infor- mation worldwide. Unaided, GPS accuracy is 100 meters in the horizontal (X-Y) plane and is 150 meters in the vertical (2) direction. GPS accuracy is improved, by use of differential, real-time corrections, to yield accuracies of 1 to 5 meters. The Z axis error component is often 50% larger than the X-Y plane error, even after dieren- tial corrections are applied. Differential corrections are supplied by a tixed GPS reference station and a data link.

  GPS receivers have significant applications requir- ing low cost and high production volume. Motorola GEG produces GPS receivers for commercial, military and aviation applications for less than $6OO/unit.

  For navigation applications, where Z-axis accuracy is very important (e.g., near zero visibility landings by aircraft), GPS by itself is not good enough. One solu-
