Abstract

With our new lie of radios with alpha-numeric dis- plays we need a way of accessing the alphabetic charac- ters from a numeric keypad. Alpha-numeric selection will facilitate searching through phone, scan, and alert listings in the radio's memory, and in modifying the alpha- numeric mode names and lists names without resorting to radio service software.

INTERACTIVE ALPHA-NUMERIC DISPLAY INTERFACE ARCHITECTURE

by Alex Rodriguez, Chip Ruelke and Kevin Mayginnes

With our new lie of radios with alpha-numeric dis- plays we need a way of accessing the alphabetic charac- ters from a numeric keypad. Alpha-numeric selection will facilitate searching through phone, scan, and alert listings in the radio's memory, and in modifying the alpha- numeric mode names and lists names without resorting to radio service software.

There arc two possible implementations for this con- cept, illustrated by sequence 1 and sequence 2. Either configuration proposed herein would utiliie an ALPHA menu item in the radio's menu to initiate the alpha- numeric entry mode. Once the ALPHA menu item has been selected a second menu selection such as PHONE, CALL, or MESSG would prompt the user to deter- mine if the radio labels for the "phone" or "call" alert listings are to be update, or whether a written "mcs- sage" is to be entered into EEPROM for later transmis- sion. After the appropriate selection either of the fol- lowing sequences could occur.

SEQUENCE 1 (Figure #l):

After entering the ALPHA mode, the user would depress the # key and a number to enter a numeric choice, or right arrow key to scroll through a list of alpha- numeric choices, or on a full keypad radio a key that has 3 letters associated with it. The three letters associated with the selected key would then appear on the display in three fields which could be individually selected by the softkey selection process already in the MT2000 radio.
