Polyolefin Compositions with Durable Hydrophilic Properties

Certain ethoxylated aliphatic alcohols provide durable hydrophilic effects to polyolefin compositions.  The ethoxylated aliphatic alcohols are incorporated into the polyolefin in the melt, for example via melt extrusion.

Provided are not only durable hydrophilic properties, but also antistat, antidust, antifriction, antifog, dyeability and printability properties.

The ethoxylated aliphatic alcohols are for example of the formula R1(OCH2CH2)xOH where x is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 and R1 is for example a straight or branched chain alkyl of 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 or 40 carbon atoms. 

The polyolefin compositions may also advantageously comprise other commercial ethoxylated aliphatic alcohols such as Atmer® 502, a 2 mole ethoxylated stearyl alcohol, C18H37(OCH2CH2)2OH, CAS #9005-00-9.  Atmer® is a trademark of Uniqema. 

Methods of incorporation of the present additives are disclosed for example in U.S. Patent application Nos. 10/045,391, filed Nov. 09, 2001 and 09/848,014, filed May 03, 2001.  The present additives may be melt incorporated via conventional techniques, for example as a preblend with other additives or as a masterbatch.

The polyolefin compositions are for example fibers, filaments, films, molded articles and woven or nonwoven fabrics.  Fibers may be for example single or bi-component fibers.
