FINGER TIP BARCODE READER

by Linda Gail Robinson

This paper describes a method for wearing a bar code reader rather than picking and placing a pencil or wand device for frequent or continuous entry of bar codes.

As shown in the accompanying figure, a means is provided for wearing the device around the wrist or forearm with the active reading probe extending down the back of the hand, terminating at the fin- ger tip and held in place with a retainer around the

index finger. When performing assembly or other handling operations not using the wand, the device is comfortably inactive. When registering an incom- ing or outgoing barcode, the operator simply bends the index finger to allow the wand to register the barcode. The device itself is connected by a detach- able tether to the host system. This allows for a dis- connect when the operator needs to leave the work area.
