1.0 INTRODUCTION

  This document introduces GMCLI-Gun Micro- controller Unit. Like in many other applications, a microcontroller can be called upon to provide elec- tronic control of guns, mainly the handguns most commonly used in households ofAmerica. A GMCU can be employed in guns to provide safety to kids as well as individuals. This document examines how a GMCU can be used to control guns.

  Studies indicate that 1 out of every 2 families owns a gun of one variety or the other. In 1 year, approximately 2500 children are killed by another child using guns. One doesn't need to look at statis- tics to realize that if not controlled, guns can seri- ously fracture American Family structure one day. A GMCU provides cheap and smart control on guns.

2.2 ELECTRONIC SAFEW MECHANISM

  Please refer to attached figure for the following discussion. It shows a typical handgun in firing position and in idle position. It also explains the basic firing mechanism. As seen from figure, when the trigger is pulled, a sequence of actions take place resulting in a bullet being fired. The gun-tiring mechanism can be considered equivalent to a state machine in a typical microcontroller, and series of actions taken to fire a bullet equivalent to different transitions of the state machine. In the lock-mode, it is necessary to interrupt the state machine tran- sitions, or block transition from some state to an- other state. For the simplicity the tiring mechanics is referred to as the Gun Control State Machine- GCSM.

  The first state of the GCSM could be the move- ment of 2 pivots: the Hammer pivot, and Trigger & Cylinder pivot. The pivots move, GCSM locks the bullet chamber in position, subsequent state machine transitions pull the main spring which is released eventually, the bullet is tired, a life is taken, and everything returns back to normal.
