by Wong Sie Hui and Chai Min Tan

CT2 CA1 digital cordless standard is now a well- established technology and has been adopted all over the world, in Latin America, Canada and the Far East, including China, as well as most ofEurope. To develop CT2 handset and base to become a higher level of consumer personal communicator products, they must have the capability to communicate with personal computer to execute services like electronic mail, data access etc. CT2 base and handset with build-in MODEM would be such a product proposed.

The integration of CT2 base with build-in MODEM as shown in Figure la, would facilitate the communication between the personal computer and phone line without the need of a separate exter-

nal MODEM unit connected.

The integration of CT2 handset with build-in MODEM as shown in Figure lb, would enable the user with portable computer such as Laptop, Palmtop etc. to communicate via handset with CT2 public base in Telepoint environment.

The basic operations,of transmit and receive are illustrated in Figure 2. Transmit operation can be either Phone or MODEM mode depending on the phone on/off hook and MODEM Request status. Receive operation can be,either Phone and MODEM mode depending on the presence ofthe pilot tone.
