Abstract

A portable radio can be damaged if the battery is removed during operation. Also, the secure keys of a secure-equipped portable radio will be lost when the battery is accidentally removed. These problems could be overcome by automatically locking the bat- tery to the radio whenever the radio is operating.

AUTOMATIC BATTERY LOCK :

by Joseph C. Namm

A portable radio can be damaged if the battery is removed during operation. Also, the secure keys of a secure-equipped portable radio will be lost when the battery is accidentally removed. These problems could be overcome by automatically locking the bat- tery to the radio whenever the radio is operating.

The battery locking device illustrated here is auto- matically asserted whenever the radio is operating.

The lock is composed of a solenoid wired in series with the radio and the battery, and an actuator. When the radio is operating, the solenoid extends the actu- ator to engage the lock. IWhen the radio is powered off, a spring retracts the actuator and the lock is disengaged. The actuator could be used in conjunc- tion with an existing manually operated lock to pre- vent the user from releasing the lock while the radio is operating.
