Background

              Mold die surfaces get dirty over time. The molding process leaves residue (molding compound and foreign material) that, if not removed, deposit in the surface and eventually causes yield loss in succeeding mold shots. Dirt deposit manifests as surface void/surface imperfection losses.

              The conventional cleaning system requires melamine-cleaning compound and uses the transfer molding technology to clean the mold surfaces. The mold dice (4 sets) are cleaned simultaneously using melamine cleaning compound. This process requires a minimum of 2.5 hours downtime whenever the mold dice require cleaning. Even though the automatic mold press is not defective, the system cannot be used when the mold dice are being cleaned. After the cleaning process is complete, the operator must inspect the mold die surface for cleanliness.

Description

              The disclosed method is an offline laser-based mold die cleaning system. It functions best with a spare mold die and a scheduling system that ensures that the mold dice do not require cleaning simultaneously.
