Abstract

To date, prior four position read switches that have been utilized in pagers have shared two com- mon problems. The first problem is packaging size. The first read switch was a large, (1.346" x 0.460"), switch assembly that had four individual position popple switches. This assembly was presented as a single unit, although there were actually four switches separated by a central and common dividing wall. This divider, shaped like the letter "H:' provided the separation necessary for the individual actua- tion ofeach ofthe different positions.

Figures l-4, can be an enhancement to Motorola's current and future pager product lines. This new switch design would eliminate the problems mentioned above:

1) Difftcult individual actuation of the four positions.
2) Providing a joystick switch package which is small and is more space efficient.

  Figure 1 shows the joystick in its compressed or unused position. By locking the joystick control in a down position, accidental actuation when the pager is handled or worn is less likely to occur. This lock mechanism would require a quarter-turn of the joystick by using a fingertip, using a snap, or using some other mechanical feature to free and lock the joystick to its desired position. Other lock release mechanisms could be used as well.

  Figure 2 shows the joystick in its active posi- tion. In this position, the user will have full control ofits Iimctions and access to the pager menus, screens, etc.

  Figure 3 shows an example of a typical external housing and its associated recesses to guide the joystick to its four discrete locations. The pivot would be below this level.

  Figure 4 shows a cutaway or x-ray view with the housing removed to expose a typical contact scheme. Distinct gaps separate each of the four positions and its associated contacts.
