  The "PAGER READY T.VI' provides the capa- bility to both retrieve and send either alphanumeric and/or numeric paging messages from a television set. The television set would be equipped with a paging receiver and decoder board and a standard Hayes compatible modem.

  The user will be alerted of new messages received with an identification as to the number of messages received. The alert provided to the user would be user programmable consisting ofeither audible alerts or simply displaying "X Messages Received" at the bottom of the screen. The user may be watching a television program and receive a page, which upon request, would be displayed on the screen in a simi- lar fashion as the picture-in-picture concept. The message displayed within the "message box" would only contain displayable ASCII characters while all other characters would be displayed as '*'. If the television set was not on, the message would still be

received and decoded and the user would be alerted ofnew messages by either visual or audible alerts.

  Another feature that this device provides is the capability to send both numeric and alphanumeric messages through the television set. The internal modem is configured by the user to access a predefined paging terminal.
