  When a call is initiated and the target does not acknowledge or the infrastructure knows that the subscriber unit is not affiliated to the system (turned OR), the initiator is given an indication in the form of a unique tone (i.e. busy signal, fast busy, reject). If a user receives this indication, the user knows that the target is unavailable to receive the request. This invention allows the request to be logged, and the target subscriber unit will be notified of this attempt to contact when it becomes available (i.e. reaffiliates, completes current call activity, or the list is modified or updated). A list is maintained by the infrastructure for each subscriber unit ID and con- tains IDS, land line numbers, or aliases of callers targeting each subscriber unit's ID. When an unsuc- cessful attempt to contact a particular subscriber is made, the initiators ID, land line number, or alias is entered into the list.

  The targeted radio will receive notification of attempts to contact along with initiator IDS, land line numbers, or aliases in three ways: (1) When a subscriber unit affiliates, the infrastructure would automatically inform that unit of any unsuccessful attempts to contact; (2) A subscriber could periodi- cally send in a request (inbound s...
