GROUP CALL PAUSE FEATURE IN RADIO COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

by Edward Zhong

In today's radio dispatching communication sys- tem, each affiliated talkgroup member is forced to stay through a talkgroup call, even ifhe is not inter- ested in the topic. A private call or interconnect call may be missed due to the resource usage.

The radio can be designed to solve this problem by having a feature to pause during a talkgroup call and to unpause to rejoin the call.

When the radio enters the pause mode, it sends a message to the communication controller to report its pause decision, then the radio goes to the control channel to be ready for other call activities. If the radio wishes, it can unpause itself and sends in request to rejoin the paused group call. The request can either be granted or be issued a busy depending upon the current resource availability. The radio will exit the pause mode when the group call is ended.

When the communication controller receives the pause request, it removes the related communica- tion resources to support the call to the requesting radio. Vice versa, when the controller receives the unpause request, it reallocates the needed resources and either grants the audio or issues a busy. When the group call ends, the controller sends a command to the radio to end the pausing mode.

Currently, there are several methods to handle the processing ofa call in which a member may not be interested. F...
