Abstract

The introduction of the Smart card in various places around the world has aroused increased inter- est in the usage of such a device. At the present time, the smart card used as a credit card has the capability of storing and updating balance of "avail- able credit" of the users. The activity of deducting from available credit is usually carried out at the point of purchase while the updating of the balance upon payment by the users are usually carried out at a predetermined location. Alternatively, a prefixed "Stored value card" could be issued by a bank or similar financial establishments, operators, to users who would purchase the cards and use them as cash. One of the key purposes for the pursue of the smart card is to eliminate the need to dial up the bank every time a purchase is made. Associated benefits will of course be the saving brought about via a massive reduction in administrative activity.

(1) and (2) listed above. This is achieved by using OTA (Over the air) updates of the credit card status (balance upon payment, invalidating the card upon stolen or any other functions).
