Abstract

In the existing pagers with multiple addresses (which typically consist ofindividual address, group address and maildrop address), the user has no way to selectively "turn olI" or deactivate any particular address without turning off the pager which effectively will shut down ALL the pager addresses. It is anticipated that occasionally users might wish to turn off only one or more of its pager's addresses for certain reasons like to maximize battery life, avoid unnecessary interrupt by message from undesired source (pager address) at particular times etc.

address for certain time period e.g. turning off maildrop address alter office hour.

(3) Allow user to avoid any unnecessary interrupt by messages sent from undesired source (pager address) and at the same time still able to receive messages from desired source.

Currently, this cannot be achieved by the con- ventional multi-address pager.

The idea of AS00 can be implemented in POCSAG, FLEX and GSC pagers. For a POCSAG or GSC pager, the particular address (which user might wish to turn off occasionally) could be a maildrop or group address whereas for a FLEX pager it could be a long code (nationwide code) or short code (local code).

In addition, this concept can be applied to the normal Auto On/Off feature to provide Address- SpeciJic Auto ONIOfffeature. With this, the speci- fied pager address wiil be automatically turned off during the predetermined period (e.g. night time, weekend).

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

In the existing pagers with multiple addresses (which typically consist ofindividual address, group address and maildrop address), the user has no way to selectively "turn olI" or deactivate any particular address without turning off the pager which effectively will shut down ALL the pager addresses. It is anticipated that occasionally users might wish to turn off only one or more of its pager's addresses for certain reasons like to maximize battery life, avoid unnecessary interrupt by message from undesired source (pager address) at particular times etc.

Below are some common circumstances under which user might like to turn off one or more par- ticular addresses:

When the news/maildrrop service is not needed in night time.

When there is no new information expected Gem information service provider during week- end. Some typical information of this nature include Stock Market info and Foreign Money Exchange info.

When job-related group call is not welcome during off time or when on vacation.

IMPLEMENTATION

DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION

This invention which aims to solve the prob- lem, namely Address-Specific OnlOfl(ASOO), allows end-users to selectively "turn-oh" a particular pager address via certain menu function activation while still able to receive pages on other addresses. The benefits offered by this invention are summarized below:

(1) Provide user the flexibility to selectively turn on (activate) or turn off (deactivate) any specific address(

(2) Maximize battery life by turning off unwanted
