TWO CONTACT BATTERY WITH INDEPENDENT TEMPERATURE (Rt)

AND CAPACITY (Cc) DETERMINATION

by Joseph Patitio

  This invention provides a means ofdetecting the battery's temperature (Rt) and capacity (Cc) or related parameter while eliminating two battery contacts and associated charger contacts. This is a cost sav- ings to the battery and charger.

  Refer to "Existing Block diagram" below. Existing batteries require two separate battery connections to determine the battery's temperature (Rt) and bat- tery capacity (Rc). The charger uses an A/D input to read the voltage that is created by the pull up resistor and the Rt or Rc element. This voltage divi- sion technique is well known.

  Refer to "Proposed Block Diagram" below. This invention uses the capability of the charger's pp to read an A/D voltage and its ability to count time while reading the voltage. The charger determines the battery's temperature (Rt) and capacity (Cc) in the following manner:

l-the charger control circuit disables the current output
2-transistor
3-transistor

Rt = (Vx) (I+) = (Vx) (RI)

5.6 - 0.6 ;Vx 5 -vx

  Now that Rt is known, the pp can calculate the Cc value from the time duration that the A/D volt- age took to stabilize (Tl) by using the standard RC rise time calculation. A unique Cc value is selected for each unique battery i type, hence the Cc repre- sents the capacity identifier element for that battery.

  Once the battery's temperature (Rt) and capac- ity (Cc) is determined, the charger can enable charg- ing in the following manner:

l-transistor Q2 is turned on switching ground onto the B- line
2-transistor Ql is turned off causing ground to be removed From the B+ line
3-the charger control circuit now enables the cur- rent output with the iroper value

  When the charger wishes to periodically recheck the Rt value to determink temperature, the original procedure outlined abovk would be followed again. In summary, this inventi,on allows for a unique way to read the battery temperature (Rt) and battery capacity (Cc) or related barameter, while eliminat- ing two of the battery and charger spring contacts. The table attached show& the cost savings to both the battery and charger if this invention wer...
