Abstract

When circuit boards are manufactured in an array format (i.e. multiple printed circuits in the same panel with tabs securing them together), singulation is required aher the printed circuits are populated. A machine is typically used for this process. Some com- mon machines are presses, robot nibblers, or programmable routers. These machines are costly and can damage the boards if not set up properly. The cost involved in wrongly singulating a board not only includes the board but all the components and labor involved in populating the board.

BREAK-AWAY TABS

by S. Warren

The tab shown in Figure 1 is designed to locate the weakest point of the tab within the board out- line. This is done by decreasing the tab width as it gets closer to the board, and also by using copper

ground plane in the array panel up to point where the break is desired. It is important to design the radius (Rl) less than the~inset distance (Dl). When the array is ready for singulation an operator simply breaks away the array panel from the printed cir- cuits. Thus decreasing the cycle time and decreas- ing the risk ofdamage toithe finished product.

Figure 2 shows an optimum array configuration to be used in conjunction with the break-away tabs. Since the array does not 'enclose the entire board it is easy to bend the array (similar to a hinge with the tabs being the pivotbpoint) and create a clean break. In the case where the array encloses the printed circui...
