ACTIVITY-DRIVEN TRUNKED-TO CONVENTIONAL COMMUNICATION METHOD

by Phil Hargrave and William Felderman

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates generally to com- munication systems where there are Conventional and Trunked radio users that need to communicate with each other.

Subscribers sometimes have a need to partici- pate in communications on two dissimilar commu- nication systems (e.g., conventional and trunking). Console patch-VOX detection on conventional trig- gers a dummy talkgroup request on the trunking system, where a Trunked channel is assigned for the call. This approach is seriously inefficient, as an entire Trunked resource is usurped for a conventional call.

The priority scan-trunking subscriber periodi- cally monitors the conventional channel, looking for activity. If found, switches over for the duration of the call. This approach results in undesired lost audio (if scan during Trunked call and no conventional activity) and synchronization problems, which result in lost audio when trying to re-sync to the trunking system (upon return from the conventional system).

subscriber radios that has this Conventional chan- nel in its scan list to go to the conventional channel directly.

If the subscriber radio unit has new program- ming to indicate what Convention frequency and what PL or DPL tone is to be included in the radios scan list, the radio user will be able to setup multi- ple Conventional and Tiunking Talk Groups...
