INTRODUCTION

  Size minimization ofconsumer electronics chal- lenges the design of the user interface to be ergonomically friendly while remaining sensitive to the product's size constraint goals. This optimized keypad design offers large ergonomic key surfaces for the user, while still providing a small cross sec- tion profile to reduce the overall volume of the product.

  In order to provide the user with a response horn a push button interface, there should be a tactile feel provided by travel and a change in the deflec- tion force. User interface areas require openings in the shell of the device. With these openings, the product becomes vulnerable to intrusions by out- side elements, and requires sealing.

SOLUTION

  The typical elastomeric keypad can solve sealing issues also, but will require extending the cross sec- tion profile height to provide travel from the web's deflection that translates the tactile feel horn the

length of the key web. By relocating the web with a creative arrangement which integrates to the key's top portion, the web continues to provide tactile feel while optimizing the keytop size. This new design also maximizes the material between the keys to provide a rigid base.
