Method for a contactless carrier-tape end fixture

Disclosed is a method for a contactless carrier-tape end fixture. Benefits include improved yield.

Background

The disclosed method addresses the problem of a die being damaged when the loose end of a die process reel is fixed. Conventionally, this problem is solved by attaching adhesive tape to the loose end of the carrier tape with the loose end taped back to itself. This arrangement enables the pressure applied to the adhesive tape by the technician’s hand to be transferred to the die below it, possibly damaging the die. Additional damage may occur at the next operation when the technician removes the adhesive tape. This situation can be very problematic if the adhesive tape was installed without leaving one end free.

One conventional solution is to tape the loose end to the side of the reel instead of the tape below it  (see Figure 1). This method is very awkward to apply. The end of the carrier tape twists, though damage to the die is reduced.

General description

The disclosed is a method for affixing the loose end of a carrier tape without applying the pressure that can cause damage to the product.

The key element prevents bump deformation to a previously pocketed die by minimizing manual handling of the carrier tape. The adhesive tape that is currently being used to tape the loose end of the carrier tape to itself is avoided and replaced by a plastic spring clip that attaches to the take up reel.
