Abstract

In contemporary pagers, a received page (whose address codeword has been successmlly detected) could be discarded silently without indicating any- thing to the user. For the paging infrastructure which provides message retrieval service, the lack of a notifying mechanism to users when a message is discarded due to certain erroneous conditions results in inefficient use of the service.

DISCARDED MESSAGE INDICATION AND AUTOMATIC RETRIEVAL OF ERRORED/DISCARDED MESSAGE

by Ong Dee Nai and Ngai Kim Hoong

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

In contemporary pagers, a received page (whose address codeword has been successmlly detected) could be discarded silently without indicating any- thing to the user. For the paging infrastructure which provides message retrieval service, the lack of a notifying mechanism to users when a message is discarded due to certain erroneous conditions results in inefficient use of the service.

The Discarded Message Indication feature described here serves to improve the missing page problem in a one-way paging system. This feature also provides "real-time" information or prompt indi- cation to users that a page has been discarded or missed as compared to the existing Missing Page Indication method which typically makes use of the sequential message numbers.

DESCRIPTION FOR DISCARDED MESSAGE INDICATION FEATURE

The key idea of the Discarded Message Indication feature is described below:

If any newly received page is to be or has been discarded due to certain erroneous conditions, an indication will be generated to notify users of the occurrence so that he/she can take appropriate action to retrieve the discarded message with the help of the minimal information extracted so far from the

detected-then-discarded page, e.g. by calling the pag- ing service operator to ask for the retransmission of that particular discarded message.

Time when the message was received

Message type (i.e. function type for POCSAG pagers and Vector type for FLEX pagers)

Source or Address on which the message was received

The contact number of the corresponding Pag- ing Service Operator
