Background

                 Multiple media is expensive for ship-in and ship-out. Conventionally, the process utilizes injection molded or thermoformed trays. Many form factors require more than one media. Where carrier tape is used, removable cover tape leaves glue residue that migrates to equipment and components, causing yield issues.

                 Conventional carrier tape has formed pockets (see Figure 1). Cover tape may be clear or opaque. It is applied with adhesive or thermally welded. Conventional carrier tape solutions consist of a carrier tape and a smaller cover tape. The cover tape is applied over the pockets after the insertion of the component and stripped off and discarded prior to removal (see Figure 2).

General description

              The disclosed method is a design to present components to automated assembly and transport to and from manufacturing sites in a single permanently covered carrier tape media. The key elements of the method include:

§         Multi-piece assembly that contains a standard carrier tape and a specialty cover tape

§         Use of a cover tape that is heavier than normal to accommodate reuse

§         Saw-tooth cuts in the cover tape to allow opening by a shoe in the unloader

§         Permanent adherence of the cover tape to the carrier tape by a thermal method or with adhesive, depending upon pocket size and pitch
