INTRODUCTION:

  Most pagers on the market today offer a feature called "Duplicate Page Detection? This feature notifies the user if the page being read has been sent before, and is still in message memory. This infor- mation is almost meaningless to the user since he/she probably doesn't care if the page was in memory at the time or not.

  A much more meaningful application of Dupli- cate Page Detection would be to notify the user that someone has been trying to contact them repeatedly, and therefore it must be urgent. The problem with duplication is that the page merely has to be in mem- ory when the duplicate is received, making it impos- sible for the user to make a determination on the urgency ofthe current page.

  Urgent Page Typing provides a means of catego- rizing duplicate messages based on three character- istics. In addition to page data matching (duplica- tion), the time interval since the last duplicate was received as well as how many previous duplicates were unread when the current duplicate arrives will all go into the determination of how urgent the page will be considered. The appropriate message will then be displayed to the user.

  In this way, using Urgent Page Typing, the user will know if the page he/she just received was one that has arrived, unread, several times (the number of attempts is programmable) within the last thirty minutes (this time is programmable also). The user will be notified by a unique "urgent alert" or "very urgent alert" tone as well as the canned message "URGENT" or "VERY URGENT" (programmable categories of urgency), rather than duplicate.
