Abstract

In .recent years, base station design architecture has evolved to more modular platforms. Along with this, came the development of extender service boards for station testing. These boards essentially "extend" electrical connection from the station backplane to modules or circuit boards removed from the station chassis for testing. An accompanying challenge to the use of this tool was to design a reliable means of supporting such modules and boards once "extended" from the station, while facilitating the connection ofthe extender boards for testing. The costs involved in possible damage to any modules or boards while attempting to "extend" them without support warranted the investigation.

An accompanying challenge to the use of this tool was to design a reliable means of supporting such modules and boards once "extended" from the station, while facilitating the connection ofthe extender boards for testing. The costs involved in possible damage to any modules or boards while attempting to "extend" them without support warranted the investigation.

PROBLEM SOLUTION

The Compact Extender Service Tray (See Fig.
1) was designed to address the needs of supporting "extended" base station modules and boards during testing. The sturdy sheet metal construction of the tray lends itself to effectively supporting numerous modules or boards at a time once they are "extended?

  The design of the tray allows for easy attach- ment to the station chassis by way of two of the four station support mounting screws (See Fig. 2). At the same time, station modules and circuit boards

can easily be removed, and extender boards can be put into place. The tray's mirror slot details to the chassis enables modules and boards to maintain their required offset horizontal and vertical distance for proper extender board a...
