Method for a leaf spring float mechanism in a rack docking station

Disclosed is a method for a leaf spring float mechanism for a rack docking station. Benefits include improved functionality and improved maintainability.

Description

The disclosed method includes a rack docking station on the rear of an electronics rack with a mechanism to take up associated assembly tolerances (see Figure 1). The mechanism ensures the proper mating of connectors in the rear of a server as it is engaged (see Figure 2). By using leaf springs on all four sides of the adapter board, 3 degrees of movement is allowed (see Figure 3).

Conventionally, when a server is installed in a rack, the operator goes to the rear of the rack to attach the cables into the corresponding connectors on the server. The disclosed method enables the operator to install a server in a safe and controlled manner by engaging a ratchet mechanism.

Advantages

The disclosed method provides advantages, including:

§         Rack docking station functionality

§         Rapid servicing and swapping of small form factor servers in data centers and server farms
