Background

              Conventionally,  PDA text entry is done via on screen software keyboards. The user must touch characters with a stylus one letter at a time, write characters on the PDA screen using handwriting recognized by the software, or use a peripheral mini-keyboard. These solutions are sufficient for small amounts of text entry but not for tasks that are more extensive.

Description

              The disclosed method includes a full-size optical keyboard for use with personal digital assistants. They project an image of a full-size keyboard onto a flat surface (similar to an overhead projector). The projected character image is captured by a charge coupled device (CCD) each time the user presses on the character image (see Figure 1), as occurs with conventional typing. The character image feeds back to the PDA, which decodes the image using optical character recognition (OCR) software. The hardware interface that captures the character image, such as a glove, is worn on the user’s fingers. The interface includes a CCD image capture device on the top of the finger. A pressure sensor on the bottom of the finger captures the character image when pressed.
