Abstract

Mobile and Portable two way radios often have multiple users. It is an important feature for the system to know the identification of the individual user of such shared equipment. This information has a number of uses but one of the most important is the ability of the system to bill the proper person or group for system usage. Also it is often desired for the system to allow users access to personal fea- ture sets. For example some systems only allow some users access to telephone interconnect. New com- munication systems have increased need for user identification because of more special services such as stock quotations or sports scores. Current art uses electronic code entry by key pad input of code plug modules to customize a fleet of two way radios for the individual. Both of these approaches are awk- ward and prone to abuse.

words. While this process would not happen real- time the delay in transmission and processing for the short speech recognition messages will not be significant to a user. The simplest example of the recognition mode digital processing would be straight sampling at a rate to accurately reproduce full voice audio. Such sampling would take about twice the message time to transmit it to the fixed equipment for recognition processing.

After the user identified himself and configured the system for his personal account and features by means of the voice recognition mode, the subscriber unit would revert to spectrum efficient voice coding digitizing mode that could be transmitted in real time over the radio bandwidth. This would be the normal operating mode ofthe system.
